One of the most serious is to be seen in connection with the reference in Esther 2:5ff., which has been interpreted as meaning that Mordecai was taken captive in 597 B.C., and that some 124 years later he was represented as the foster-father of a young and beautiful girl.18 On this basis critics have supposed that the author was completely ignorant of Persian history, since he imagined that Xerxes I (486–465/64 B.C.) reigned shortly after the time of Nebuchadnezzar II (605–562 B.C.). A careful reading of the Hebrew text is sufficient to dispose of this objection, however, for on examination it becomes apparent that the relative pronoun “who” in verse 6 obviously refers to Kish, the great-grandfather of Mordecai, and not to Mordecai himself.[1]
Aside from the rather obvious fact that Xerxes could have monopolized a large harîm, it is clear from the writings of Herodotus that the monarch was not averse to contracting improper sexual relationships even when he was tottering on the brink of defeat in Greece, so that he would have no compunction about choosing any woman who took his fancy if his circumstances at any given time dictated such a procedure[2]
Consequently there is no a priori reason why Esther should not have been promoted from the ranks of the harîm, and although secular history says nothing about the identity of Vashti or the fate of Amestris, this silence should not necessarily be interpreted as constituting a repudiation of the events narrated in Esther. Until more is known about the life of Amestris it seems unwise to conclude that she remained the only wife and the sole queen of Xerxes, even though she was a cruel and calculating woman of whom the king himself stood in some dread.[3]

no difficulty in supposing that, during the reign of Xerxes, one who occupied the position of a secondary wife was made the means of averting some calamity that threatened at least some of her compatriots, and that the extant narrative of the book was formed upon this foundation[4]
Historians and archaeologists have already confirmed the fact that the author possessed an amazingly accurate knowledge of Persian palaces and manners. Further light on this dark period of Jewish history may reveal that the author’s claim for the historicity of his story is not totally erroneous[5]
